BETTY Lynn, who starred as Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show, died on Saturday.  The actress passed away at the age of 95 in Mount Airy, North Carolina. The Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy announced her death on Sunday, adding that private services will be held in Culver City, California. Betty had been living at a retirement home in Mount Airy, the same city as the birthplace of Andy Griffith, since 2006. She was best know for playing the sweet girlfriend of Don Knotts' Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show. Her co-star Ron Howard, who played Opie Taylor on the show, mourned the loss with a touching note on Twitter on Sunday. He wrote: "RIP Betty Lynn. She truly was 95yrs young." Betty was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 29, 1926, and she began her entertainment career at just five years old when she started studying at the Kansas City Conservatory of Music. When she turned 18, she took part in a United Service Organizations (USO) entertainment tour, where she sang for members of the Armed Forces and their families. In the late 1940s, Betty began acting onscreen, making her feature film debut in the comedy-drama Apartment for Peggy. Soon after, she starred alongside Bette Davis in June Bride and Loretta Young in Mother Is a Freshman. She also worked on the 1950 version of Cheaper by the Dozen, another Bette flick, this one titled Payment on Demand, the musical-comedy Meet Me in Las Vegas, and more. She later starred as Thelma Lou on The Andy Griffith Show from 1961-1966. The actress also had recurring roles in television shows like Where's Raymond?, Texas John Slaughter, Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color, and Sugarfoot.
