Provided the record is ratified, Kiplimo's time of 57:20 allowed him to reclaim the WR that had previously been held by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha since 2024.

Kiplimo won the 2025 Chicago Marathon and had held the half marathon record for nearly three years when he ran a 57:31 on the same Lisbon course. After Kejelcha broke it, Kiplimo became the first runner to go under 57 seconds last year in Barcelona, but World Athletics didn't ratify the record, saying the race conditions were improved by a pacemaker.

"I'm so happy to break the world record," Kiplimo said, according to Reuters. "After the first 10km, I thought the world record was possible. I tried to keep pushing the pace in the final two kilometers."
