LSU vs Auburn Prediction: How Good Are Both Tigers?

Pete Fiutak Thu, October 22, 2026 at 6:12 AM UTC · 4 min read About Our Ads Advertisement Advertisement Advertisement All of a sudden, the SEC is up for grabs, and Auburn and LSU had a lot to do with that. Ten SEC teams fall into the 4-1 to 2-2 range after Auburn pulled off a stunning 27-24 win at Georgia last week. The rest of the AU Tiger schedule is challenging, but if you can beat Georgia in Sanford Stadium, the bar gets set a little higher. LSU lost both of its road games – Ole Miss and Kentucky – but it's been an unstoppable force at home, destroying Clemson by 41, Texas A&M by 29, and beating Mississippi State 31-0 last week. The Bayou Bengal Tigers are still among the most dangerous and talented teams in the country on the right day, but, like Auburn, one more loss and that's about it for the SEC and College Football Playoff dreams.

LSU gets a nasty run over the next three games, but Alabama and Texas are home games before going to Tennessee.

Auburn goes to Ole Miss next, and three of the last four SEC games are on the road.

LSU beat Auburn 48-18 when the two last met in 2023 and has won six of the last eight games.

LSU has to take the fight to Auburn right away, but without getting caught up in the tempo. The Auburn offense wants to move at a lightning-fast pace, and Lane Kiffin's attack is at its best when it's going 150 miles per hour. The one big difference is control of the tempo. LSU is amazing at dominating the time of possession battle, and it should hold the ball for large chunks of time. Auburn is 133rd in the nation, keeping the ball for fewer than 27 minutes per game. As much as the offense matters, though, it's the LSU defense that has to keep Auburn from getting out of third gear. LSU is second in the nation in sacks, and AU can't keep quarterback Byrum Brown from getting popped.

It really is impressive. LSU looks and plays like it has 14 guys on the field who are all twice as fast as everyone else … at home. The LSU offense wasn't too bad in the losses to Ole Miss and Kentucky, but the defense occasionally played like it didn't attend the last three classes before the test. It's not a coincidence. LSU has allowed more than 145 passing yards just two times this season. Take a wild guess which teams got it going through the air. In case you were wondering, the 21-15 win over Vanderbilt is the only time Auburn failed to throw for at least 145 yards.

Let's get it out of the way. It wasn't funny when the line was first written in 1999, and it's even more brutal now, but college football is nothing without its traditions, so … "This is our five-star, all-time, can't-miss lock of the century for this week … the Tigers are going to win." Really, how did Auburn beat Georgia? First of all, Auburn is just that good. But also, it actually held its own in the time of possession battle – the defense held up and wasn't gassed late. That, and it helped to get be +3 in turnover margin. LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt will throw his customary interception – although he didn't give one away for the first time all year in last week's win over Mississippi State – but LSU's control of the clock and the narrative on the lines will be enough to finally get a road win.
