A security guard fatally shot an armed man at an office building campus near Tampa, Florida, on Nov. 4 after the suspect shot and killed a woman in an outdoor courtyard, officials said.
The brazen early afternoon shooting took place at Citibank Center about 9 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. In addition to the two people killed, at least four others were injured, police said.
At the time of shooting there were 3,200 Citibank employees at the building, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Frank Losat told reporters during a mid-afternoon news conference.
At 12:11 p.m. ET, Losat said, police received multiple 911 calls of shots fired in the building's plaza.
Within one minute, a sheriff's office unit arrived, Losat said, and at 12:15 p.m. ET, a Citibank armed security engaged the armed suspect in the building's cafeteria.
"Both individuals exchanged gunfire and the suspect was shot and transported to a hospital where he was pronounced deceased," Losat said.
Prior to the suspect being shot, Losat said the man drove a small four-door sedan through a secure fenced part of the building and crashed into an outdoor seating area "where multiple people were having lunch."
"He then exited the car, approached the female with a rifle and she was shot," Losat told reporters.
Who was killed in Citibank Center shooting?
Police have not yet released the identity of the woman killed or the shooting suspect.
Losat said a motive in the shooting remained under investigation, and it was not immediately known whether the suspect and woman knew one another.
"We are very fluid at this stage in the investigation," Losat said. "This is a sad day for everyone involved."
At least four other people were hurt and taken to a hospital to be treated for unspecified, non-life-threatening injuries, Losat said. He did not elaborate on how those individuals were hurt.
Losat commended the security guard for his training, which he said potentially saved many others lives.
"Kudos to that security guard," Losat said.
USA TODAY has reached out to the sheriff's office for more information.
People were being asked to avoid the area.
This is a developing story.
