NASHOTAH, Wis. (AP) — Without Gordon Lightfoot's song, the Edmund Fitzgerald could have faded from memory along with the names of the roughly 6,500 other ships that went down in the Great Lakes before it.

Lightfoot was inspired to write his ode to the Fitzgerald and the 29 men who died on board after reading the first story about the wreck and a Nov. 24, 1975, article in Newsweek magazine. The song was released in August 1976, less than a year later.

Lightfoot's mournful storytelling propelled the tragedy into infamy. Affection for the song and interest in the wreck has sustained for half a century, though it wasn't even the deadliest recorded on the Great Lakes. The deadliest wreck on open waters was the Lady Elgin in 1860, which historians estimate killed nearly 400 people.

"The song has made this by far the most famous Great Lakes shipwreck," said John U. Bacon, author of "The Gales of November," a recently published book coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the wreck. He said the Edmund Fitzgerald trails only the Titanic and possibly the Lusitania as the most famous shipwreck in the world.

Rick Haynes, 80, played bass on the single and in Lightfoot's band for 55 years. He said the first recorded take of the song was what they released on the album "Summertime Dream."

"When you listen to the record Edmund Fitzgerald, it's like he's putting you right there, like he was right there," Haynes said in a telephone interview from his home in Canada. "And that's pretty hard to do with a tragedy like that, you know?"

Debbie Gomez-Felder was 17 when her father, Oliver "Buck" Champeau, died on the Fitzgerald. She couldn't bear to listen to the song at first.

"I put it on the record player and I thought, 'Oh no, this music is eerie,'" she said. "I turned it off."

But she came to love it.

"The part that says 'All that remains are the faces and the names of the wives and the sons and the daughters,' I thought there wasn't a word he missed," Gomez-Felder said. "There wasn't anything he didn't recognize."

Lightfoot died in 2023. His widow, Kim Lightfoot, said in a statement to The that "the Edmund Fitzgerald was always present in Gordon's mind."

"Just as he eulogized the tragedy in song for the world, he also kept the memory alive in our home; Paintings, models and tributes adorned the walls and followed us from room to room as we went about our daily lives," Kim Lightfoot said. "If Gordon were with us today, he would have been intent on helping keep the candle of memory lit."

Lightfoot met regularly with family members and famously changed one of the lyrics at their request, removing a reference to a disproven theory that unsecured hatch covers caused the wreck. The exact cause remains a mystery.

That mystery and the song continue to draw people to the wreck, including a new generation encountering the story through TikTok and social media. Bruce Lynn, executive director of the Great Lake Shipwreck Museum, said children visit the museum wearing costumes of the Fitzgerald.

"There's something about the Fitzgerald that really draws that attention," he said.

Haynes estimated that he has played "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" more than two thousand times without tiring of it. Lightfoot's band still tours and plays it at every concert.

Haynes remembers flying with Lightfoot to Whitefish Point, Michigan, to mark an anniversary of the wreck. They met with victims' families then Haynes took a walk along the shores of Lake Superior, looking out toward where the Fitz sank, about 17 miles away.

"I just sat there for about 15 or 20 minutes reflecting on all this stuff that had passed in connection with the Edmund Fitzgerald," Haynes said. "And it was very emotional for me. It always has been."

Heidi Klum, is that you?

The supermodel, 52, has outdone herself once again, stepping out in yet another unrecognizable costume this year that only further solidifies her status as the Queen of Halloween.

Klum dressed as the mythological Medusa, debuting her transformative look at her annual Halloween party in New York City on Friday, Oct. 31. Her husband, Tom Kaulitz, was dressed as a Greek soldier turned to stone. According to Greek mythology, anyone who looks upon the hideous Medusa turns to stone.

Despite being turned to stone by her stare, Kaulitz tells PEOPLE on the red carpet that he found Klum's costume to be "sexy."

"I think he looks super hot," Klum adds of her husband's costume.

"HAPPY HEIDIWEEN 🐍Don't stare too long or you'll turn to stone," Klum captioned an Instagram reel showing off the costume.

Klum's latest intricate costume was complete with a long tail and moving snakes that replaced her hair. She hissed at the gathered red carpet photographers and pointed a bow and arrow as she posed for pictures.

Klum started sharing photos and videos of the intricate makeup process early Friday, even tagging the makeup designer Mike Marino to give him credit for his work. Marino is a three-time Oscar nominee thanks to his work on The Batman, Coming 2 America and A Different Man. He also won an Emmy for his work in transforming Colin Farrell into The Penguin.

In classic Klum fashion, she doesn't take the easy way out. Rather, she goes all in on her costumes, even if that means hours upon hours in the makeup chair and months of preparation to perfect the look.

In the lead-up to the big costume reveal this year, Klum had been teasing bits and pieces of her look on social media.

On Oct. 24, the America's Got Talent judge shared a black-and-white photo of the backside of a bare mannequin's bodice on Instagram.

"Feeling cheeky," she captioned the photo without further context, adding the hashtag, "#HeidiHalloween."

Also in the days ahead of the haunted holiday, Klum posted throwback photos of her costumes from year's past. Among them included Betty Boop in 2002, Fiona from Shrek in 2018 and Jessica Rabbit from 2015.

She also told PEOPLE just days before the party that this year she would be "ugly" instead of "cute" like last year's costume.

For 2024 bash, the Making the Cut host went with something out of this world. She and her husband, Tom Kaulitz dressed as E.T. (with Klum adding a blonde wig to her disguise.)

Jenna Dewan and her kids are celebrating Halloween with another year of creative costumes!

In a post shared to Instagram on Friday, Oct. 31, the Rookie actress, 44, shared photos of her family — including daughter Everly, 12, whom she shares with ex Channing Tatum, as well as son Callum, 5, and daughter Rhiannon, 15 months, both of whom she shares with fiancé Steve Kazee.

Dewan uploaded an adorable snap of her younger children smiling next to one another, with Callum sweetly smiling in his frog costume while Rhiannon shows off her cotton candy costume.

The actress then shared a video from Callum's school Halloween parade, and caught a sweet moment as her son walked down the runway and waved to his classmates.

Dewan also shared a snap of herself, Rhiannon and Kazee smiling in a selfie. The proud mom of three was dressed as a fly, with big glasses and an antenna headband to go with her son's frog look.

Meanwhile, Kazee sported the same piñata costume he wore in 2022. She simply captioned the post: "We committed."

Her final two Instagram stories included an adorable photo of Rhiannon standing in the school, with no acknowledgment of a banner of a vampire staring down at her. Dewan topped off the celebrations with a funny video of her son embracing his costume and rubbing his belly as if he had eaten a bunch of flies. "Belly full of flies," she wrote.

Dewan, Kazee, and their kids have long been candid about their love for Halloween. Speaking to PEOPLE last fall, the The Resident actress joked that she "always laughs" when picking out a costume for her daughter Everly.

"She doesn't pick a costume that I can just go buy at a store," Dewan explained. "She's like, 'I want to be the anime character from this TV show' that no one else has ever watched, that there's zero costumes on the internet for."

"I'm on Etsy three months ahead of time trying to find bits and pieces that all come together to be this one anime character," the mom of three added to PEOPLE. "But that's been fun but it's every year, so I'm used to it with her."

As for her Callum and baby Rhiannon, Dewan shared that their costumes tend to be a little bit easier.

"Callum wants to be a dragon, so we're looking for the cutest dragon costume or dinosaur," she shared at the time.

"And Rhiannon, I'm just looking for the cutest little costume I could find for her. I think right now we might make her just a little pumpkin, because she's got that newborn, cute little chubby cheeks, and I think a pumpkin costume would just be the cutest thing ever."

Last year, the family rocked a Jurassic Park-themed group costume. The mom of three dressed as Alan Grant in khaki pants, a blue button down, a red necktie and safari hat, while her fiancé Steve Kazee played Ian Malcolm, sporting a sleek, all-black look complete with a leather jacket and small glasses.

Meanwhile, Everly perfected the look of Ellie Sattler, wearing khaki shorts, a blue tank top and red button-down tied around her stomach. Her son Callum, 4, smiled big and spread his wings in an orange pterodactyl costume. Rhiannon, then 4 months, stole the show, as the most adorable T-rex.

"Welcome to Jurassic Park 🦕," she captioned an Instagram post, featuring photos of their family costume.

In one photo, the family poses in front of a green screen showing Jurassic World, and in another, everyone except Callum hangs out on top of a Jeep Wrangler. When one fan asked Dewan where her son was, she replied, "Pterodactyl wasn't wanting to stay still for pics... it was a brief sighting."

Halloween isn't just a holiday for Heidi Klum; it's a runway ritual.

While some of her peers play it safe, Klum treats it as her personal Met Gala in which she strives to claim the spotlight every single time.

And so, every year, fans and fellow A-listers crowd her feed (and her bash) to see what boundary she'll cross next, and true to form, she never disappoints.

Here, we revisit 15 of her Halloween looks and the costumes in which she turned Hollywood's spooky season into a spectacle.

#1 2018 - Princess Fiona

In 2018, the retired model treated her followers to a video interview, dressed as Fiona from the animated movie series Shrek. Her fiancé at the time, Tom Kaulitz, from the German band Tokio Hotel, was dragged into the gag and made to dress up as the titular character. In the interview, Klum said she was surprised that Kaulitz agreed. Kaulitz used the opportunity to score some points."She still looks pretty," he said into the microphone.

#2 2025 - Medusa

Starting with the most recent: Klum showed up in a long snake like outfit and as a nod to the age old legend, captioned the image: "Don't stare too long or you'll turn to stone."Fans welcomed the sighting with one person summing up the general sentiment, writing, "So awesome. I can go to bed now. The only reason I stayed up was to see the reveal."The most recent Halloween post was the only one she opened up for comments.

#3 2024 - Et (The Female Version)

In 2024, the 52-year-old opted for something out of this world—quite literally. She appeared as E.T., well, the female version at least, and in her photo dump of the event, she could be seen next to the opposite gender of the creature. Both had the wide-eyed ovoid visages that have long defined TV watchers' perceptions of what extraterrestrials look like as they waded through the grass. It must be noted that so much thought and effort went into the costumes that Klum's was able to move its eyes around in their sockets—eyes definitely were not hers; they were way too big. Also, a telltale pair of oglers, two holes more or less where a human's nose would be in relation to their eyes, and a telling horizontal slash below them appeared on the costume's neck. This was where her actual face was. Either that or E.T. has two faces, and Hollywood has been keeping it a secret.

#4 2019 - An Alien With Its Innards Showing

October 2019 was a particularly gory evening for anyone in attendance. According to In Style, the costume makers took 12 hours to put together what was at that point dubbed an "alien" look. But truly, it is reminiscent of something that escaped the ME's table mid-post-mortem, put on a pair of heels, and tried to slay at Heidi's Halloween party.

#5 2017- A 'Thriller' Style Werewolf

In 2017, Heidi Klum found inspiration in Michael Jackson's Thriller music video by donning the white socks—and a werewolf upper torso.Like with numerous other performances, the actress had a cast of extras to complete the look.

#6 2015 - Jessica Rabbit

Heidi Klum, it must be said, mimicked Jessica Rabbit to the point that it looked like the animated character had stepped out of the TV screen.Images posted to her Instagram account show her in character and costume, strutting her stuff in a setting much like that in the movie Who [unalived] Roger Rabbit?According to In Style, it was not so much the idea that won Klum attention – Victoria's Secret model Alessandra Ambrosio showed up wearing the same costume at the event – but rather the prosthetic curves.

#7 2014 - A Butterfly

While Klum may have described herself as "winging it" in 2014, we beg to differ. That costume, like so many others, must have consumed time and effort.According to reports, the model walked the streets of New York in the costume before attending her own party. She would later explain: "I have no problem with bugs and spiders or snakes and that kind of stuff. I like them."

#8 2012 - Cleopatra

Perhaps as a nod to the industry that propelled her to fame, Heidi Klum paid tribute to an ancient queen—one who was renowned for her beauty and intelligence: Cleopatra.Like all of her Halloween endeavors, this one was comprehensive, sporting everything from the headgear to the eyeliner.Tellingly, she conveyed this message at her first Halloween after she split with her ex-husband, Seal.

#9 2011 - The Human Anatomy

Heidi Klum's outfit in 2011 was not so much scary as it was anatomically accurate to the point of being horrifying.Klum donned a body suit that depicted what a human would look like if their skin were peeled off. To complete the performance, she was wheeled in on a gurney by two individuals donning lab coats so stained that they could just as well have experienced a mishap at a ketchup factory.

#10 2010 - An Extra-Tall Robot

Klum took high-fashion to a whole new level when she came dressed as a robot. "High fashion #HeidiHalloween back in 2010" she captioned the photo posted on Instagram nearly a decade and half later. She was not joking when she said high fashion. The robot costume she donned extensions below her feet that made her at least two heads taller."Klum embraced the futuristic trend of the time with her two-ton, towering robot costume," Woman's Wear Daily wrote.Two-ton you say? We are going to need to see the receipts for that.

#11 2002 - Betty Boop

The model took a leap back three decades to celebrate Halloween in 2002 when she came outfitted as the cartoon character, Betty Boop. She reposted a video of the event in 2018 in which she was being interviewed. "I love Halloween," she told a journalist. "It's so much fun."But she loved the character more and indicated as much when she wrote:"I loved those super long eyelashes and extra curves, so much fun to dress as a cartoon character!"

#12 2000 - An Adult Version Of Children's Folk Tale, Heidi

The turn of the century would be a big one, or this is what we would have expected. But not so. Not to say it was underwhelming, especially not to Heidi Klum because she wore a black spandex dress designed by "the one and only @marcbouwer."Believe it or not, this was her take on Heidi, the legendary character from children's books. As NBC reported, the model's understanding of the character entailed a "downtown after-dark spin."

#13 2023 - A Peacock Themed Display With 5 Other People

Heidi Klum took on a Peacock theme. She was not outfitted as a peacock herself, but in order to complete her look, she required at least five extras. So essentially, for Halloween 2023, Klum came dressed in five other people—and a lot of feathers.

#14 2022 - A Life-Sized Worm

We have to give her costumes stats for being creepy and scary, like in 2022, when she had a life-sized worm costume designed for the night. In one of the photos published on Instagram, she could be seen next to what appears to be an angler who picked the wrong worm for his hook and was rewarded with a gruesome injury to his left eye.

#15 2004 - What May Or May Not Be A Witch

In 2004, Klum showed up in what looked like bolts of red lace. The only clue as to what she was going for here was her caption that read: "Cursed and captivated."For "cursed," we look at the pointed hat and think witch. As for "captivated"… We guess this is up for interpretation. We think she was referring to her singing while suspended from the ceiling.

"After all I've contributed to the tournament and been an ambassador for them, I can't go and have a practice round there with my three grandchildren…It's terribly, terribly sad," said Gary Player, as he was surprised by the mistreatment he received at Augusta National. A three-time Masters Tournament champion, he has always had issues with the course management. And the Black Knight reiterated the same moments before he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Speaking to Adam Schupak from Golfweek, he was asked what legacy he would like to leave behind upon his passing. Player told Schupak, "I hope I'm the head pro at Augusta. But they won't let me play a single round with my three grandchildren, so they're not going to let me be the head pro there." Perplexed by the issue, the reporter asked why that was the case. Player replied, "That's something you have to ask Augusta, not me."

For a fact, it's not like Gary Player is not an honorary member of Augusta National. The Big Three achieved that honor a long time back. But, as he had explained in his previous interviews, every time he approached them to book a tee time to play with his grandchildren, Augusta National always came up with an excuse to turn him down. Eventually, Player just gave up and realized that he is not welcome on the iconic course, despite being an honorary member.

In fact, his animosity towards the course is such that he doesn't even rate the prestigious major anymore. When he was asked to rank the four majors, Player replied, "I rate the Open at one, the U.S. Open two, PGA three, and Augusta four." His response received a lot of negative reactions, as there is a common belief in the golf community that the Masters Tournament can't be ranked lower than the second spot.

All the controversies aside, it's not uncommon for Gary Player to make surprising claims. Even if they go against the common belief of the golf community. In fact, he made another statement recently that may have shocked a few netizens.

Gary Player doesn't shy away from speaking his mind

It's not uncommon for Gary Player to make surprising claims or reveal shocking information. Many were surprised when he confirmed that he was in love again at 89 back in late 2024 and revealed his new girlfriend, Susan, to the world. A few weeks later, on Valentine's Day, he shared a beautiful montage slideshow on Instagram dedicated to his late wife, Vivienne Verwey, as he celebrated their relationship.

Only a few hours ago, another one of Player's interviews revealed that he said something even more surprising. He stated, "In 1953, when I started it, I was condemned. Arnold Palmer, my brother, said, 'Gary, you can't do this weight training.' Bobby Jones said, 'Gary, you can't do all this weight training. You're going to get muscle-bound. You won't win tournaments after 35.' Well, they're all dead and I'm still going." Even though Gary Player's statement about Arnold Palmer & Bobby Jones is true, his bluntness often takes many by surprise as he continues to live with a free mind like he always did.
