Tijuana police said a group of armed men ambushed Cardenas, 25, on the Playas de Rosarito-Tijuana road in an attempt to kidnap the Corridos Tumbados singer, according to Punto Norte.

Cardenas managed to escape his kidnappers' grasp by jumping out of the vehicle the suspects had placed him in.

The gunmen fired multiple shots at Cardenas, who was found dead with his wrists handcuffed, the outlet reported.

Photos from the scene obtained by Punto Norte showed the musician lying beside an orange Renault Stepway van.

Cardenas' record label, Street Mob Records, founded by renowned Mexican artist Jesús Ortiz Paz of the group Fuerza Regida, confirmed his death in a statement.

"On behalf of Street Mob Records, we deeply regret the passing of our colleague and brother Chuy Montana," the statement posted on Instagram read.

"We stand in solidarity with his family during this time of grief. We kindly request understanding and respect from the media at this difficult moment."

Before Ortiz Paz's Street Mob Records signed him, Cardenas was popular on social media for singing and playing his guitar between vehicles waiting in line to cross back into the United States via the San Ysidro, Tijuana, side of the border in Mexico.

A viral video on social media showed the moment Cardenas and another fellow guitars ran into Ortiz Paz, who was seated in the back seat of a car waiting in line to cross back into the US.

Cardenas is seen singing to Ortiz Paz, who then asks the Tijuana native in the video if he wrote the song.

Ortiz Paz pulls out a piece of paper and signs Cardenas to his Street Mob Records, saying, "Sign here only. It's all set; you're signed to the company. They're going to send you a message. Go home, that's it."

Cardenas eventually blew up following the release of his singles Porte de Scarface and Ramos Buchones.

He was featured in the single Polvos de Chanel from Fuerza Regida's latest album, Pa las Baby's y Belikeada.

Ortiz Paz mourned Cardenas' death sharing a pair of videos of the two singing in what appeared to be private events.

In one of the videos, shared on Ortiz Paz's Instagram Stories, Cardenas is seen sitting on a sofa playing the guitar while the Fuerza Regida frontman is rapping.

The second video, recorded in a lavish backyard, shows Cardenas and Ortiz Paz rapping together.
