CONTROVERSIAL lawyer Aonghus McCarthy has been hit with a €350 fine for sending a stunned cyclist flying after flinging his car door open.

McCarthy, who previously hit the headlines after a judge struck out a case against him for possession of cocaine while visiting a client in jail, was sentenced this week over a road traffic charge.

Dublin District Court heard the cyclist's arm was "ripped open" in the collision with the lawyer's motor.

Legal eagle McCarthy, 38, pleaded guilty to causing the door of his Volkswagen Scirocco to be opened in a manner that could cause danger or be an obstruction.

The cyclist required hospital treatment after being catapulted from his bicycle when McCarthy suddenly opened the door of his vehicle at Parkgate Street, Dublin 8, on January 5 2021.

The offence happened near McCarthy's office, which is opposite the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin.

Judge Michele Finan heard the victim was taken to hospital after being bashed by the car door and required surgery for arm injuries.

The cyclist victim gave evidence at Dublin District Court about the collision and the "painful" resulting injuries.

Speaking about the lead-up to the incident, the shocked biker declared: "I was in the cycle lane and a door opened up into my arm."

After being hit by the car door, the court heard the victim came off his bike and landed on his back.

The victim, who required surgery in hospital, has been forced to take "a lot of time" of work following the collision.

Asked by Judge Finan how his arm was now, the victim said: "It's not the same as it was."

The man outlined how he was an avid cyclist at the time of the collision.

He explained: "At that point I would cycle 10,000 kilometres a year.

"I was getting my fitness up and keeping it up, I was at a certain level."

'Life changed'

But the court heard his life "changed in a second" following the collision, with the victim now only "occasionally" managing to get on his beloved bike.

Following the incident, McCarthy was charged with causing the door of his vehicle to be opened where it was liable to cause danger or obstruction at Parkgate Street, Dublin 8, on January 5 2021, with the offence contrary to the Road Traffic Act.

McCarthy's solicitor told how her client was entering a guilty plea and "fully accepts" the injury caused.

The road traffic rap comes after McCarthy was spared a criminal conviction after donating €1,250 to a drug treatment centre after being caught with cocaine while visiting a client in jail.

McCarthy was granted a reprieve by a judge after being caught with €26-worth of coke in his wallet while on a professional visit to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

The Cork-born solicitor said that someone else put the drugs in his wallet at a party.
