Fianna Fail drops to lowest position in polls in almost TWO years despite big Budget vows as Sinn Fein support rises | 6WIK77Z | 2024-04-29 00:08:01
FIANNA Fail has slumped to its lowest position in the polls in almost two years — just 14 per cent.
Micheal Martin's party fell two per cent in the latest Business Post survey.
This is despite FF securing widespread media attention in recent weeks following big Budget promises made at its Ard Fheis — including a €10 increase to the child benefit.
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein solidified its position as the most popular party in Ireland with support rising two points to 27 per cent.
The other big winners are Independent candidates, who have seen their popularity increase by two points up to 19 per cent.
And Fine Gael got a one point bump up to 20 per cent, with the party's popularity continuing to rise after Simon Harris took over as Taoiseach from Leo Varadkar.
The Social Democrats remained unchanged at six per cent and Aontu dropped one point to four.
The Greens are down one point to three, the same as Labour, who remain unchanged.
And People Before Profit dropped one point to two per cent.
The poll results emerged as Sinn Fein today launched its campaigns for the local, European and Limerick Mayoral elections, which take place on June 7.
Sinn Fein is running six candidates for Europe, including Lynn Boylan, Chris MacManus, Michelle Gildernew, Kathleen Funchion, Paul Gavan and Daithi Doolan.
Limerick TD Maurice Quinlivan is running to become the city's first ever directly elected mayor.
Speaking at the launch in the Helix in Dublin, Mary Lou McDonald said: "We are determined to elect the strongest possible team of Sinn Féin councillors to work with a Sinn Féin led government after the next general election delivering the largest social and affordable home building programme in the history of the state.
"We are running a strong team of candidates in the European election who bring formidable track records on working hard to deliver change.
"Maurice Quinlivan is contesting the Limerick Mayoral election to be a voice for all the people of Limerick and unlock the potential for the city and county to thrive."
