Gary Neville has defined why Raphael Varane has not had the same impression on Manchester United as Virgil van Dijk has on Liverpool.

United appeared to have pulled off a serious coup once they signed Varane from Actual Madrid in 2021 for £42million.

The centre-back had spent a decade with Los Blancos, profitable four Champions Leagues and three La Lia titles, as well as the 2018 World Cup with France.

But at Previous Trafford he's been hit and miss, whereas he's also missed 39 games so far with damage, with the 30-year-old recently opening up about concussion issues he's been having.

Speaking on The Overlap, Neville was asked which present Liverpool star he would 'steal' for United and the previous club captain stated: 'I might take Van Dijk,' explaining that the group needs a commanding presence at the back.

Requested why he felt Varane hadn't offered that as many thought he would, Neville added: 'I don't assume he'll ever be that player.

'For me, once I watch Varane, he truly defends his a part of the pitch very nicely and the box very properly – he heads out a variety of balls and is sort of dominant in the air.

'I just assume he's that type of centre-half who will all the time do – and to be truthful he may need been at Real Madrid when he was alongside [Sergio] Ramos – his own job rather well however I don't assume he'll influence the players around him.

'And that's not a criticism by the best way, because to be truthful there are lots of great centre-halves who do their own job very properly however don't truly handle a back 4.

'A fantastic centre-half who can handle a back four is your Van Dijks, your [John] Terrys – nice players of all time – but he's just a type of great centre-halves that does his personal job rather well, I feel.'

As a lot as United followers would hate to admit it, there are a selection of Liverpool players who would simply enhance the Purple Devils, not least Mohammed Salah, but Neville believes the present Reds captain can be the perfect 'steal'.

'I simply assume that Van Dijk would deliver dominance to the group and a presence within the staff that we haven't received. We haven't acquired a ahead nearly as good as Mo Salah, however we've acquired gifted forwards,' he added.

'I all the time assume for those who've obtained a spine of power and presence… We all the time say, don't we, "Oh, there's no Roy Keanes anymore, there's no Vincent Kompanys anymore, there's no John Terrys' – there truly is one now at Liverpool, when you consider how he's carried out this season, Van Dijk. He's an enormous presence on that pitch.

'He's not the identical character as some of people who I've mentioned, however he truly is sort of dominant on the pitch, he speaks a lot more than individuals may assume and he truly is somebody you possibly can see that's obtained an aura about him.

'And I feel that if you want to change Manchester United's full and utter tradition, then they need that dominant one that holds them together. And I feel Van Dijk would management [Kobbie] Mainoo, even someone like Antony or [Marcus] Rashford. I feel he would construct them, not break them.'

United are set to play arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday, but before then they face mid-week clashes towards Chelsea and Sheffield United.
