The ending of Where the Crawdads Sing has confused viewers since the film's release in 2022, as fans are desperate to understand who killed Chase.

Netflix UK is set to release the film adaptation of the best-selling 2018 book, Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens this weekend.

The book broke records for the most number of weeks at number one slot on the The New York Times bestseller list for hardcover fiction.

Starring Daisy Edgar Jones as Kya the wild Marsh Girl, Taylor John Smith as Tate, and Harris Dickinson as Chase, the film was also a huge success during its initial release, grossing $144.3 million worldwide on a $24 million budget.

The film focuses on Kya, an outcast in a small town in North Carolina who is accused of murder when a beloved local boy – named Chase Andrews – is found dead after being pushed off a fire tower.

In the film, Kya is acquitted of his murder when it's established that the case against her is flimsy and she has been accused because of the townspeople's hatred towards her.

She goes on to live a happy life with Tate, the boy from town who always showed her kindness, but after her death decades later, the truth is uncovered.

The twist ending to this film has confused fans who were blindsided by this conclusion, so who really killed Chase?

Did Kya kill Chase?

It is revealed in the final moments that Kya killed Chase and was the killer all along.

In the film, after Kya dies at an old age, Tate flips through her old handwritten books and finds a drawing of Chase. The next page shows his shell necklace, which was key to the murder investigation.

The final scene shows Tate dropping the shell onto a beach and letting the water wash over it, showing he will die with Kya's secret.

The book ending is similar but details further how Kya killed him.

After Kya dies, Tate finds Chase's necklace and poems written by Amanda Hamilton, revealed to be Kya's pseudonym.

One of the poems describes how Kya lured Chase to the tower and then pushed him off. 'Luring him was as easy,' reads the first line in the poem. Another part of the poem reads, 'The last step, a trap./ Down, down he falls/ His eyes still holding mine/ Until they see another world.'

The book then describes Tate's reaction, knowing he'd find the missing necklace. 'He looked out the window, making certain no one was coming down the lane – not that they would, why would they? But to be sure. Then he opened the small box, knowing what he would find. There, laid out carefully on the cotton, was the shell necklace Chase had worn the night he died.'

After realising that Kya had killed Chase, a similar ending takes place as Tate then destroys the necklace in a symbolic move, keeping her secret.

Kya's motive for killing Chase is for her own protection. After running into him in town with his fiancée, she realises he has just been using her for sex. She then rejects him when he tries to continue their relationship and he hits her.

After hitting him back he then tries to rape her, but she manages to get away, hitting him with a rock.

Kya realised that she would never be free from Chase and so decided to kill him so that she could continue to live her life, taking back the necklace she once gave him to symbolise the end of her relationship with him.

Where The Crawdads Sing is coming to Netflix on Sunday.
