The October 1959 issue of Harper's Bazaar featured an essay by Truman Capote that, in many ways, defined the terms 'beauty', 'grace' and 'socialite' as we understand them today. Titled 'A Gathering of Swans', the piece highlighted an elite group of elegant, stylish, influential women in American high society - the so-called 'swans' - including Babe Paley and her daughter Amanda, as well as Gloria Guinness's daughter Dolores. The latest edition of Australia's Harper's Bazaar attempted to recapture the seminal majesty of Capote's prose and photographer Richard Avedon's imagery.
