Bondi Beach shooting suspect charged with murder and terrorism

Australian authorities charged the surviving suspect who allegedlyopened fireon a Jewish event on Sydney's Bondi Beach with 59 offenses, including murder and terrorism.

New South Walespolice said on Dec. 17 that Naveed Akram was charged with 15 counts of murder, 40 counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder, and one count each for committing a terrorist act, discharging firearms, placing explosives and publicly displaying a terrorist organization symbol.

Fifteen people were killed and dozens more injured in the Dec. 14 attack that targetedAustralia's Jewish communityduring an event celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. The second suspect, Akram's 50-year-old father Sajid, was shot dead by police officers at the scene.

At least 16 killed in Bondi Beach "terrorist" attack in Australia

Bondi Beach attack:fears stoked as 'tsunami of anti-Jewish hate' grows

The incident was the country's deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

The younger suspect was critically injured in the attack. Police said they were waiting until his medication wore off before questioning him and that a court case has been adjourned until April 2026.

The charges came as mourners in Sydney gathered for the firstfunerals for the victims.
