Data can be breached by hackers – or by employees[/caption]

The company faced data breach claims after an employee allegedly shared patient information on GitHub, Top Class Actions reported.

The employee's alleged actions were discovered and Med-Data announced the breach in March 2021.

The suit alleges the company was too slow to inform patients about the breach in 2018 and 2019.

Med-Data denied wrongdoing but agreed to settle the claims for $7 million.

The deadline to file a claim is May 21, 2024.

There are multiple "tiers" of benefits you can receive if you qualify.

WHO CAN GET MONEY?

Anyone whose data was shared on GitHub in 2021 by a Med-Data employee qualifies.

There are three separate tiers of benefits.

Tier one reimburses up to five hours of time lost as a result of the breach, whether spent on credit monitoring or setting up additional services, for $25 per hour.

That tier also pays up to $5,000 in documented expenses.

Tier 2 is for those without documented expenses.

If you took "any action at all" in response to the incident, you can get a payment of up to $500.

Tier 3 benefits go to everyone who qualifies — this includes credit monitoring services.

More details are available on the settlement website.

MORE SETTLEMENTS

Because their data is often sensitive, medical companies who have security failures often have to pay out hefty sums.

ACTS Retirement Services, a company based in Pennsylvania, Florida, and Maryland is making similar payments.

After Social Security numbers and health information may have been compromised, the company reached a settlement.

It's now paying up to $3,500 per claim.

Personal Touch Holding Corp, a Delaware-based homecare company, also faced data breach allegations.

A settlement in that case has led to payments of up to $7,500 per claim.

A prosthetics company is also paying $2.9 million.

Biometric consent suits in Illinois have caused heavy payouts, like this $8.73 million settlement.
