COSTCO members discussed customers taking advantage of the generous return policy by returning unwanted items.
Shoppers can return almost anything to Costco under the store's 100% satisfaction guarantee.

In the Costco subreddit, members discussed questionable returns they've witnessed that they felt took advantage of the policy.
"I had a family member buy two electric bicycles for the summer and returned them in the fall because they didn't want to store them," they wrote in the Reddit thread.
"They happily told the story like they were proud they did it. After I explained that's not what returns are supposed to be used for, we got into it and I haven't talked to them since.
"It's not about the return, it's about knowing right from wrong."
At the same store, they saw another member return a lawn mower that was over a year old.
"The worst abuse I've witnessed was a guy returning a 10+ year old lawn mower that was dirty, rusty, covered in oil and grass. And when they asked what was wrong with it, he said it just stopped working, and they gave him his money back," they added.
But some people defended the returns.
"It's part of Costco's business model. One of the biggest draws of shopping at Costco is their "Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee,"" replied a customer.
"Obviously, it sucks to see people "abuse" their generous return policy because, eventually, the cost will be passed down to the customer in the form of higher membership prices or a more strict return policy. E.g. when Costco changed the return policy on some electronics to 90 days.

"People returning 7-year-old TVs for a refund eventually became enough of a hit to the bottom line that they did something about it."
SOMETHING FISHY
Whether an item is returned and a customer is refunded is ultimately up to the staff at Costco.
Despite the lenient policy, they can deny a return for many different reasons.
A former employee explained on Reddit that she only denied one return, and it was extremely obvious why.
"This guy came in wanting to return rotten salmon he left in his trunk for months," she wrote.
"It was green and black and smelled like absolute death. I denied the return."
"Got called every name in the book but still denied the return."

The shopper was so upset that he canceled his membership on the spot.
But other customers and staff who witnessed the transaction stood by the cashier's choice.
"I was also eight months pregnant and extremely tired of the conversation, so my coworkers were defensive of me, obviously, including members that were in line."
She added that customers can bring in just the labels and a photo of the rotten item if they end up in the same situation.
"The store has a "no item present" button for a reason," she wrote.
Employees blasted a customer who tried to return a hot tub without fully emptying it.
Another Costco shopper was "warned" by an employee after returning more than half of the products he bought.
