SOME Americans could qualify for a one-time payment from a pet settlement if they meet a crucial criterion.
The settlement comes after a class action lawsuit was filed against Elanco Animal Health and Bayer.
Elanco Animal Health is a veterinary pharmaceutical company and it acquired Bayer Animal Health during an acquisition deal in 2020, per Top Class Actions.
Plaintiffs in the case accused the companies of misrepresenting the effectiveness of its Seresto Flea and Tick Collars and neglecting to disclose potential health risks to pets from using them.
The collars were allegedly not effective for the eight-month period they advertised, according to the suit, and plaintiffs claimed the product caused neurological damage and even death to pets in some cases.
Elanco and Bayer have not admitted to any wrongdoing in the case.
The brands instead agreed to a $15 million settlement to resolve the claims and avoid further legal costs.
Direct payments are headed out to some US residents, but those who want to get their money must file a claim form soon.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible Americans need only meet one criterion to obtain a payment from the settlement deal.
They must've purchased a Seresto Flea and Tick Collar before July 8, 2024.
Additionally, that collar must've been bought for personal use and not for resale.
The prospective claimants do not need to provide proof of purchase for the collars.
<!-- End of Brightcove Player --> Those who don't have documentation verifying their purchases can only claim up to two collars per pet in their household.
According to the settlement website, those who do have proof can verify the transaction through various forms.
A photo of the product, pet medical bills, veterinarian declaration, bank statements, invoices, or in-store and online receipts would work.
FILING A CLAIM
To file a claim form, claimants can do so digitally through the settlement website.
The deadline to file is set for July 23, 2024.
The same date is set for the last day claimants can opt out of the settlement deal.
A final hearing for the case is set for December 4, 2024.
POTENTIAL AWARD
Payment amounts for customers will vary.
A set award of $13 per Seresto Flea and Tick collar purchased before the July 8, 2024 date is listed.

Claimants with proof can claim an unlimited amount of collars.
Owners who can verify their pet was injured when wearing the collar can get an additional $25 for economic losses or even 100% of out-of-pocket medical costs that are properly documented.
If a pet was killed in connection to the collar, with verification, claimants can get a $300 additional payment and 100% out-of-pocket medical reimbursement, along with burial or cremation expenses.
