IRISH people are set to get a glimpse of the Northern Lights this weekend in some parts of the country.

According to Alan O'Reilly from Carlow Weather, the stats are looking good for clear skies, meaning the Northern Lights could appear.

The weather is set to take a turn on Sunday following temperatures of over 20 degrees

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Alan shared the promising news with his followers – despite the weather to take a turn on Sunday.

Alan said: "The stats still look good, there is still a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights tonight.

"Away from the light, facing north, and keep your phone dead steady.

"If the stats stay strong enough, anywhere in the country could see them.

"We're not likely to see them with the naked eye, maybe if you're up north and away from the light you might – you might need to have your eyes adjust to complete darkness."

Alan advised anyone wanting to capture the Northern Lights on their phone should have it set in long exposure mode.

He added that if it's an iPhone, this is an automatic feature once the device is held completely still, ideally on a tripod or propped up on something else.

As for Ireland's weather this weekend, we've seen highs of up to 22 degrees on Friday with clear skies covering most of the country.

For the Northern Lights to be visible, skies must be completely clear and the best chance of any view is in an area with little to no light pollution.

Met Eireann's Andrew Doran-Sherlock earlier issued an update for the incoming mini scorcher.

He said: "Saturday will be another mostly dry day with plenty of warm sunshine."

The weather is set to turn a little cloudier in the evening with some rain particularly in the northwest.

Met Eireann issued a warning ahead of high UV indexes over the sunny spell.

Andrew advised: "For the next few days the UV index will be moderate bordering on high.

"So, do remember to be sun smart and use sun cream."

Weather turn

A turn is expected in the weather from Sunday.

Met Eireann have advised of "heavy" rain and thunderstorms.

They said: "Sunday will bring a mix of cloud and sunny spells with showers or longer spells of rain, some heavy with the chance of isolated thunderstorms.

"Highest temperatures of 15 to 19C in light and variable breezes.

"On Sunday night, showers will gradually die out.

"However, rain will move in from the southwest by morning."

A weather warning has been issued in Northern counties ahead of the turn in weather for Sunday as a yellow thunderstorm warning will be in affect for Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry from 11am to 7pm.
